    Women’s Officer:
    A New Leadership Role for Mill Hill Shul

    Services
    • Being the point of contact and offer guidance and support in the women's section of the main synagogue service on a weekly basis.
    • Being involved in the normal work of the Executive in planning synagogue activities and providing for the normal functioning of the synagogue
    • Providing specific support and advice during services relating to various touchpoints relevant for women only, including:
      • Acting as liaison with the wardens to alert them to women wishing to recite Kaddish (mourner’s prayer) 
      • Offering assistance in following the service and orientating women during Kriat HaTorah and Haftarah
    • When women wish to attend weekday services, including when they have a yahrtzeit or are in avelut (mourning), ensuring that there is a mechitzah in place as well as support for females saying Kaddish 
    • Organising ‘approved’ women-only services and women-only megillah readings.
    • Ensure that the proper attire (e.g. head and shoulder covers), the non-use of electronic devices and decorum is administered in the women’s section of the Synagogue and that women attendees are given information on the service if required.
     
    Lifecycle Events
    • As above, assisting women with saying Kaddish 
    • Providing support for simcha families in planning the ceremonial element of smachot (celebrations), in accordance with Shul tradition and rules as approved by the rabbinical team and wardens, particularly in relation to Bat Mitzvahs.
     
    Wider Women’s Engagement
    • To support the Executive, wardens and rabbinic team on issues that relate to or might affect women
    • Be involved in ongoing considerations in proposed synagogue building and refurbishment projects when they come up which impact women’s engagement.
